This article covers managing your own custom nameservers and applies to RESELLERS OR DEDICATED SERVER CUSTOMERS ONLY. If you have a regular hosting plan with us and need help managing your DNS, see our article on updating your nameservers or contact our support team for assistance.

Using our nameservers

We use and offer four DNS servers via multiple providers throughout the country. This ensures a reliable response and safety net for domain resolution - domains using our four nameservers will continue to resolve even if one or more nameservers or data centers goes offline.

To take advantage of this on yourReseller orDedicated Server hosting plan, you can set up your own nameservers that use your domain. For example, if your domain is domain.com, you would use ns1.domain.com through ns4.domain.com. All resold accounts set up under your plan would use these same nameservers.

Our current DNS Servers / IPs:
  • ns1.mainehost.net - 206.189.214.6
  • ns2.mainehost.net - 138.197.133.219
  • ns3.mainehost.net - 162.243.40.9
  • ns4.mainehost.net - 207.244.97.95
Initial Set-up

If you are unsure how to proceed with the information below or would like some assistance, please open a ticket with our Tier 2 team. Incomplete or invalid DNS settings can lead to DNS resolution problems, including email/site outages.

To begin using our DNS servers with your domain name, follow these steps:
  1. Add the appropriate entries via cPanel (Advanced Zone Editor) or WHM (Edit DNS Zone). You will need to add entries for ns1-ns4 with the corresponding IPs above.
  2. For Dedicated Server customers, make sure you update WHM to recognize your new DNS servers. This can be done via the "Basic cPanel & WHM Settings" option in WHM.
  3. Register all four nameserver IPs at your domain registrar. The steps vary by registrar; here are the KB articles for Enom, GoDaddy, or you can search the web for "(registrar) register nameserver IPs" or contact your registrar for assistance.
Once you're done, allow some propagation time (up to 24 hours) before pointing any domains. After a day or so, you are free to point any domain to your new nameservers just as you would have used ns1-ns4.mainehost.net.

Some domain registrars, such as Enom, require you enter your past IP address in order to register the updated IP address. Your registrar may have tools to check this (such as the "Check Status" tab on Enom's My Name Servers page) or you can check your current nameserver IP through an online tool such as DNS Stuff.
