Verifying a Google My Business

Can I verify my At Home Business?

Short answer: yes, you can pass video verification for an at-home business — but you must prove legitimacy, not signage. Google doesn’t care about your logo; they care that the business physically operates where you claim it does.

Here’s what actually works:

What Google is really checking

Google video verification is trying to confirm three things — nothing more:

  1. You’re physically at the address

  2. The business exists and operates there

  3. You control the business operations

Signage helps, but it is NOT required for home-based or service-area businesses.

What to show in the video (this matters)

1. Start outside (critical)

  • Show street signs

  • Show the house exterior

  • Pan slowly so Google can match Street View

Do not rush this part.

2. Show access control (this replaces signage)

This is where most people fail.

Show something that proves only the business owner could be here, such as:

  • Unlocking the front door

  • Unlocking a home office door

  • Entering a garage used for business storage

Google needs a “key moment” — literally or figuratively.

3. Show business evidence INSIDE the home

This is where home businesses win or lose.

Show real operational items, not decorative nonsense:

  • Branded invoices or paperwork

  • Computer screen with:

    • Business email

    • Accounting software

    • Client dashboard

  • Tools, equipment, inventory

  • Shipping supplies with business name

  • Service tools (laptops, meters, cameras, cleaning gear, etc.)

🛑 Do not stage fake signage — Google rejects this constantly.

4. Say it clearly (yes, talk)

Out loud, calmly say:

“This is [Business Name].
We operate from this address as a home-based business.
We serve customers off-site / online.”

Google does use audio context.

What DOES NOT work (don’t waste time)

  • Blank rooms

  • Just a laptop

  • “We work remotely” with no proof

  • PO boxes / UPS Stores

  • Virtual offices

  • Shared coworking desks

  • Printed logos taped to doors

These all trigger denials.

Business Profile settings matter (do this first)

Before recording the video:

✔ Mark it correctly

  • Set business as Service Area Business

  • Hide the address (even though verification uses it)

  • Add real service areas

This reduces the burden of proof.

If you absolutely have no physical proof

Then be blunt with them:

“Google may not approve this listing.”

In that case:

  • Use owner verification, not agency

  • Make sure business has:

    • Utility bill or lease (same address)

    • Tax documents matching business name

  • If denied twice → request manual support escalation

Pro tip (this increases success rate)

Record the video:

  • In one take

  • No editing

  • No filters

  • Slow movement

  • Stable camera

  • Under 2 minutes

Google’s AI hates jump cuts.

Reality check

Google is cracking down hard on fake listings. If this business is real, operating, and compliant — it can be verified without signage. If it’s borderline, Google will block it no matter how clever you get.
